Fossils and Strata

I think it is the right place here to thank Dr. Stefan Bengtson, Stockholm, Sweden, for his long-term effort and success of having made Fossils and Strata one of the major monograph series in Palaeontology. F & S is covering a large variety of geological, comparative morphological and systematic-phylogenetic papers of, sometimes, impressive lengths which could not have appeared elsewhere. Some issues were conference volumes, as you can see in the table below. With a printed size of A4 Fossils and Strata was the forerunner and measure for all journals and series of that kind. Eventually, however, this fine monograph series almost ceased to be published, but then the publisher and the editor changed.

New publishers and editors

Under the subsequent publisher, Taylor & Francis, there was the bitter pill to be swallowed by authors in that they have to find substantial financial support to get a ms published in F&S – it is now a commercial system.

Six years ago, volume 49 has appeared, a big work (238 pages) by Maas, Waloszek & Müller on the morphology, larval development , systematics and phylogeny of the Phosphatocopina, small bivalved crustaceans from the Upper Cambrian ‘Orsten’, which for long have been misunderstood as ostracodes (and still continued so by some colleagues despite of the evidence given). The authors have not received enough free reprints – simply too expensive –, so that interested people are welcome to order this valuable volume from the publishers (or you us ask for a xerox copy). In the meantime, a few more volumes have appeared, as can be seen below.

The new editor, Prof. Dr. David Bruton, Oslo, has done an equally fine job, and, thus, F&S remained one of the best monograph series in the PalaeoWorld. Yet we don't know if he is still active since F&S is now published by Wiley:

http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-390172.html

It seems however a little strange that they don't really list the journal and do not know tha they have already volume 57 out. So see below for the complete list. Strangely there is also a volume 14 from 2007, not really fitting into the set, and although it has been puslished way back in 1981. Their typos are also numerous, and they list Müller ans Muller and have capitalized the species names.

Note

Dieter Waloszek's true (given) name is Waloszek (or Waloßek), but has been introduced into the literature as Walossek in the early days of his career. He continued to use this wrong spelling for longer, but decided eventually to return to his birth name.
